About the Exhibition
With the arrival of sîkwan (spring) comes the change in the sîsîkwan (rattle) constellation, its head now pointing east and downward, signaling a coming time of renewal ushered upon the land through seasonal change. With this comes a sacred sound, emulated by the ceremonial rattle of ice crystals formed below the snow and moved by the wind.
Join Ryan Richard and various ISAP Peer Mentors in the Sculptor's Studio installation at the Snelgrove Gallery from March 2 - 6, where, together, we will make rattles and other art as we learn about the sîsîkwan constellation. Several rattles will be attached to a kinetic sculpture titled sîsîkwan (rattler) — a non-ceremonial artwork that will shake many of the rattles created all at once. All art made will become part of the overall installation, kihtwâm âpacihtâwin.

Growing up in the former Métis community of Fox Farm (Nordale), I learned to see these cycles of renewal as a guide. Today, as a sculptor, I work to mirror this process by renewing found materials to bring new life and purpose to objects.
