Layers and Stories brings together an eclectic selection of photographic works by senior students from the University of Saskatchewan, developed within the context of Jennifer Crane's advanced studio course. Presented at the Snelgrove Gallery, the exhibition reflects a range of individual approaches and concerns, each work carrying its own distinct narrative. Collectively, these works suggest a field of layered perspectives—diverse, intersecting, and unresolved.
Bailey Fehr-Lawrence is a fourth-year Studio Art and Art History major whose practice centres on relationships and storytelling through photography. Her work is defined by clean, soft compositions that highlight her subjects, emphasizing their individuality, lives and personalities. Through this approach, her work balances careful composition with natural presence, resulting in photographs that are both visually refined and deeply personal.
Desheng Guo hopes that the images, and lines in their photography can interact with the viewer. When people see something dangerous, they might instinctively avoid it. However, holding a tool in one's hand could prompt a courageous response. With thier work, they ask, "Can fixed lines, freely moving birds, falling snowflakes, and serene Buddha statues evoke inner peace and focus in the viewer?".
Nova Heartfire is a third-year studio art major, focusing on photography. Their primary focus is relationships between people and themselves. They explore ideas of the relationships between friends, family, and others and how they can influence the well-being and decisions people make. Their aim for their work is to teach and educate others on substances, emotional health, and physical health. By using staged photos, models, and the artist themself they show how addictions to drugs, alcohol, and unhealthy relationships affect our emotional and physical health.
Adam Logan is a Canadian-born visual and audio artist whose work encompasses abstract photography, audiovisual installations, and intermedia collaborations. His solo practice features kinetic, visual abstractions, time-based media, and generative aleatoric soundscapes that explore perception, memory, and dimensionality.
Zhang Meng is a Studio Art major whose practice investigates the alienation of an individual's identity under the weight of external validation. In her series The Measured Self, she utilizes a combination of photography and digital manipulation to visualize the invisible pressures of societal expectations. Her work is characterized by a clinical, minimalist aesthetic, often incorporating ready-made objects and precise compositions to create staged narratives. By exploring themes of fragmentation and the "quantified self," she aims to challenge viewers to re-examine their own realities beneath the weight of modern beauty standards. Through her lens, the portrait is transformed from a personal record into a critical study of contemporary culture.
