Gordon Snelgrove Gallery

This online exhibition featured artwork made by Senior Painting students during fall session 2020.  Fourth year and Master of Fine Art graduate students developed self-directed work, while third-year-level students responded to artwork in the Kenderdine Art Collection. Investigating other artist’s lives, methods, and ideas, can offer context and permission to use other kinds of strategies, quickening the path to innovative creative problem solving. As a term project, third year students adopted two technical methods from one painting in the Collection such as composition, colour, paint application, or a signature method such as patterning or use of mixed media, to inform their painting. 

With the shift to remote learning, challenges and opportunities arose.  Students, who normally have access to studio space at the university, used their own spaces such as kitchens or spare bedrooms to make their paintings. Those who worked in oil learned how to integrate non-toxic mediums into their process to paint safely at home.  Many students used acrylic more frequently or as an underpainting.  They also learned how to photograph their artwork with a camera or a cell phone, format, edit and submit images, and navigate online platforms - similar to website template design; all skills in which they need to practice as professional artists.
