Caroline Monnet: Creatura DADA // Mobilize
JANUARY 17 - APRIL 17, 2020
College Art Gallery 2
curator, Leah Taylor
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, January 17, 7pm
The solo exhibition presents two major video works,
Mobilize and Creatura Dada, from Canadian artist Caroline Monnet. Mobilize takes us on an exhilarating journey from the far north to the urban south. Over every landscape, in all conditions, everyday life flows with strength, skill and extreme competence. The fearless polar punk rhythms of Tanya Tagaq’s Uja underscore the perpetual negotiation between the modern and traditional by a people always moving forward. Mobilize was commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada to address Indigenous identity and representation by reworking material in the NFB’s archives.
In Creatura Dada six powerful native women gather up to celebrate a new beginning and the end of the world as we know it. Produced with the participation of Alanis Obomsawin, Nadia Myre, Swaneige Bertrand, Nahka Bertrand, Emilie Monnet, Caroline Monnet, and Stefan St-Laurent, Creatura Dada was directed by Caroline Monnet and commissioned by Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (2016).
