Creatures in Translation

Curated by Kent Archer
creatures in translation is a solo exhibition of new sculptures and prints by Saskatoon- based artist Susan Shantz. Initially pondering the loss of cultural information that occurs as a result of digital reproduction of art and artifacts, Shantz's project delves into a richly entangled web of related queries and concerns.
About the Artist
Susan Shantz received a B.A. in English Literature (Goshen College, Indiana), a M.A. with Distinction (Wilfrid Laurier) and a M.F.A. in Sculpture/Interdisciplinary Art (York University). She teaches sculpture and multi-media studio practices. Her artwork consists of mixed-media installations, often sculptural in form, that explore embodied ways of knowing. She is interested in ritual and gesture and the ways in which art arises from these and becomes a cultural performance. Her media are varied and derive from conceptual concerns, which often arise from autobiographical material.
